The Russian Chairwoman of the Federation Council: world politics and economy need a reset

The Organising Committee meeting of the Third Eurasian Women's Forum was held on Monday. The event was led by the Chairwoman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko.

"Today, in world politics and in the global economy, there is a need for a reboot, which is called a fresh breath of air, not a sweeping look at the problems and challenges that arise. Under such conditions, the role of women is objectively increasing," she said in her opening remarks.

The Chairwoman of the Federation Council named increasing women's contribution to the economy, digital transformation, health development and environmental issues as priority issues to be discussed during the upcoming forum.

Valentina Matviyenko reminded that the United Nations has declared next year the International Year of Peace and Trust.

"However, look at what is happening today in all sorts of ways on the planet, including, unfortunately, our neighbours - wars, protests, unrest and terrorism. Civilians, especially women and children, often suffer as a result," she said, adding that women can play an important role in conflict resolution.

In this regard, she said, one of the sessions of the upcoming event should focus on strengthening the role of women in building a stable and secure future.

In addition, one of the themes of the forum, Matviyenko, pointed to the development of a creative economy.

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova drew attention to the issue of combating the coronovirus. "This is what we live with and will probably live a long time. The role of women in the fight against infectious diseases is strategically important," she said and pointed to the need to strengthen this issue in the forum's agenda as part of discussions on health care.

Golikova called the promotion of young and talented girls and their development as leaders another important aspect. In this direction, she suggested, for example, combining the efforts of the Russian Leaders of Russia national management competition and the Eurasian Women's Forum. Matviyenko supported this initiative.

The third Eurasian Women's Forum will take place in September next year. It is the largest authoritative platform in the world where the issue of women's role in modern society is discussed. The main goal of the event is to consolidate and develop interaction between women leaders in addressing current issues.

The Forum is organised by the Council and the Interparliamentary Assembly of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
