The first Russian smallpox medicine was created in the Vector Center together with specialists from the Novosibirsk Institute of Organic Chemistry. The drug was called "NIOH-14" - doctors say that it is low toxic and a small dose is enough to cure. According to the Izvestia newspaper, it is planned to launch the drug into mass production only if there is an outbreak of the disease, but it is known that a small batch will be sent to the state reserve.

"We managed to create an antiviral drug to fight smallpox, which is universal against all smallpox viruses. Work on it has been carried out for more than 10 years," the publication quotes Larisa Shishkina, head of the department of prevention and treatment of particularly dangerous infections of the Vector center.

It is also reported that the drug has passed clinical trials on almost a hundred volunteers.
